Product claim: Vegan

In this article, you will discover additional information about the ''Vegan'' claim and whether or not you have the ability to make this claim for your cosmetic product.

"Vegan" is a term used to describe a lifestyle and dietary choice that abstains from the use of animal products in all aspects of life, including food, clothing, cosmetics, and more.

What does Vegan mean for cosmetics?

Vegan cosmetics are entirely free from animal-derived ingredients, such as beeswax, lanolin, or carmine, which are commonly used in traditional beauty products and the products are not tested on animals. To read more on animal testing in cosmetics click here.

Product claim Vegan

To claim that your cosmetic is vegan, you must provide documentation form the Raw Material supplier stating that the entire product is free from animal-derived ingredients. Additionally, you need to show that no animals were used in the manufacturing process, including as catalysts, and that no animals were harmed in any way. It is also important to demonstrate that the end-product and its ingredients were not tested on animals. This means that for every single Raw Material, except Aqua, we need a Vegan statement from the Raw Material supplier.

Non animal-derived ingredients

For your ingredients you can check on a raw material level if the ingredient is not animal-derived. For example, you can check the origin of the ingredient, mostly described as 'vegetable origin', 'animal origin', 'synthetic' etc. This can give you a clue on wether or not your ingredient is animal-derived. For some ingredients a vegan statement, stating the ingredient does not originate from animals and no animals are harmed, is given by the supplier straight up. Furthermore, for each ingredient the supplier needs to give a statement, that the ingredient itself is not tested on animals, but this is obligatory in all types of cosmetic Raw Materials anyways!

Vegan logo: can I just use a Vegan logo?

It is not obligatory for a product to be certified by a 3rd party, so a product owner can also claim self-compliancy and create their own logo for this (as long as this does not violate any copyright!). Some example we see are 'VEGAN' in a box on the label, or a written claim stating the product is vegan.

If you want to use an existing logo, you can check out the following websites: The Vegan Society , V-label.org or PETA-approved VEGAN.
