What is GMP?

Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2000 of the European Union mandates the use of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in the production of cosmetics. Here we explain what GMP is.

This is what the EU legislation says about GMP

EC 1223/2009 Article 8 on Good manufacturing practice

The manufacturer of cosmetic products shall comply with good manufacturing practice with a view to ensuring the objectives of Article 1. Compliance with good manufacturing practice shall be presumed where the manufacture is in accordance with the relevant harmonised standards, the references of which have been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Which company should have GMP?

For cosmetics, GMP is all about the process of creating cosmetic products. That means both the production of the formula (in manufacturing, this is called the 'bulk'), but also of the packaging (also called 'filling'). Therefore, both the 'manufacturer' and the 'packager' should have GMP.

In most cases, both the production and the packaging is handled by the same company, but sometimes brands choose to split it up - mostly because in their specific cases, it is cheaper to do so, or either part requires some specific knowledge or set-up.

What is GMP?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices. Every cosmetic product needs to be produced according to the GMP guidelines for cosmetics (ISO 22716), as stated in Article 8 of the Cosmetic Regulation.

What does ISO 22716 do?

The manufacturing, control, storage and distribution of cosmetic items is regulated by ISO 22716:2007.

These recommendations give your business useful strategies for controlling the numerous factors that may have an impact on product quality. From correct training for personnel, protection and safety of personnel, the cosmetic product itself and the end-consumer, implement quality controls to handling complaints.

How does SkinConsult check GMP?

When a product is produced and packaged by a manufacturer, the GMP certificate of the manufacturer in question needs to be uploaded. This can be done in the SkinApp at your Action Items or under Company Parts

Where can I get my company audited for GMP?

If you produce your own products, we highly recommend you to get an external ISO 22716 certification. In order to get a GMP certificate, your company will need to undergo an audit. We recommend Q- Point, as they can both help you implement and certify ISO 22716.

What are benefits of getting audited for GMP?

Gains from ISO 22716 certification for your business include:

  • Enhancing quality management systems and/or programs
  • Demonstrating a dedication to the security of your cosmetics products
  • Ensuring that you are adhering to international standards
