What is The Triman Logo, and when do I use it?

The Triman Logo is not an EU directive, but rather a French one. Here we explain what it is and when to use it on your cosmetic packaging.

What is the Triman Logo?
On recyclable goods and packaging marketed to customers in France, the Triman Logo must be printed as of January 1, 2015. This is to comply with the French Decree No. 2014-1577. This sign was created primarily to help customers understand how to sort their trash. The Triman Logo is intended to identify products and packaging that should be disposed of separately in waste streams like paper or recyclable plastics.

When do I need to use the Triman Logo?
As it is a French directive, not a European one, the Triman Logo only has to be used for products that are intended for the French market. If you are planning on distributing the product throughout the EU however, it has to be on there.
Moreover, if the product is not exclusive to the French market, the country code “FR” should be applied to avoid confusion for customers in French-speaking countries where other rules may apply.

Triman Logo and sorting advice
Since march 2023 simply using the Triman logo is not enough, you must also give specific sorting advice. This can be in text (must be French) and/or symbols. For example:

Generally there are 2 sorting bins in France: Glass (green bin) and all other materials (yellow bin).
If there are multiple parts to your packaging (for example, inner and outer packaging) then the respective sorting manner should be displayed separately. For example:

General guidelines of the Triman Logo:
-Never smaller than 6mm
-Mandatory color scheme and sorting information (visit https://www.ecosistant.eu/en/services/ for more help)

What if the Triman Logo does not fit on my packaging?
Previously, it would be allowed to display the logo on a website - however from January 2022 it has become mandatory to display it on the physical product itself. If the Triman Logo does not fit on the packaging anymore, it is allowed to print the logo on a leaflet or other documents that come with your product.
